Definition of a Ferry

A ferry, less commonly known as a ferryboat, is a boat or ship used to transport passengers, vehicles and sometimes cargo. Ferry services generally operate on a frequent basis to and from set docking destinations, from regional stops in waterside cities to major international ports. Designated passenger ferries that provide a service between many destinations are sometimes referred to as water taxis or water buses.
